Although the theme of Aboriginal Education Month is "Aboriginal Presence in the War of 1812", I wanted to write briefly about what is currently a very live issue in Canadian law - the funding of child welfare services to First Nations children on reserves.
First Nations children are overrepresented in all areas of social concern. In contrast with non-Aboriginal children and youth, First Nations children are more likely to be born into poverty, to suffer health…

November is Aboriginal Education Month. Although this year's theme is 'Aboriginal Presence in the War of 1812', I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend a couple of fiction books written by aboriginal author - Joseph Boyden.
He was the 2008 Giller Prize recipient for 'Through Black Spruce' (novel of contemporary aboriginal life, full of the dangers and harsh beauty of both forest and city). He won many awards for his first novel 'Three Day Road' (an unforgettable portrait of…

Sure I knew that he was a big baseball fan and that he's a talented craftsman, and maybe even that he's a little fussy about the things he likes to eat. However, I really didn't know Louie until…

This summer, I was able to play a part in doing something special for a very special person. His name is Louie Di Florio, or to most of his family he’s Nonnie, a variant of Nonno or grandfather, or at least that’s how this endearing term got adopted in his family. Louie is a friend of the family; I guess or I could more accurately say Louie is my brother-in-law’s Nonnie-in-law; as I said, it’s probably best to think of him as a friend of the family. I only came to know Louie when our family…

Just got back from a day in Peterborough at the old cottage...........I'd forgotten how beautiful the view is looking west over the lake. It sure brought back a lot of memories of the place where our kids enjoyed their summer holidays and weekends. I just submitted the request today for a demolition permit to demolish the old place.......our son Steve is going to build a new cottage on the site, so we won't have the old place any more, but all the memories will be intact. It was the one…
