In order to hit consistent shots you need to have good swing mechanics, a solid set-up and a consistent technique, but there are certain overlooked principles that if you follow will give you a great golf swing. When I say that these principles are "overlooked" I mean that you know that you're supposed to follow these principles, but you don't. So in this article I'm going to give you three golf swing tips which, if you follow, will go a long way to producing consistent shots.

The basics of an appropriate golf swing are universal. A correct golf swing really consists of three separate segments that every golfer really should work on in their efforts to develop and improve their game.

Firstly, training and fitness are fundamental components in today's game of golf. It is imperative with the aim of the golfer is fit and flexible preceding to a round of golf. How many golfers do you know who consider a round and then head straight off onto the course without including any sort of training or warm up routine. This is a significant blooper, not just will this influence your game of golf, but it may possibly maybe cause irreversible injury to your body.

Second, you will need to consider is the golf grip. This is where you connect yourself with the ball through the golf club. Always remember that the key to get the best golf grip is not by gripping too tight. Gripping too tightly can create problems such as slicing and connecting with the top of the ball, driving it into the ground. Simply grip the golf club firmly with a light pressure on the handle. To get a feel for this, consider your grip it at most 7 out of 10 gripping pressure.

Unless you have the consistency and are approaching the level of success regularly achieved by Padraig Harrington, I suggest that you focus using your golf mind on getting the best out of the swing you already have. There's no harm in seeing your regular golf instructor, if you need to, to make sure you haven't slipped into bad habits. Remember that the destructive shots you hit are more likely to come from your conscious thoughts than from your unconscious golf swing.

Lastly, slow your swing down and concentrate on form. For me, it was realizing that I was really trying to "kill" the ball and putting way too much back swing. I focused on only coming back 1/2 to 2/3 of what I was doing earlier and this added significant control to my shot. I may have lost 15% in distance but I gained 50% improvement in accuracy which translated to an average of 5 - 10 shots of my rounds.

Hey Mason, thanks for this.  I always say I will start out the season with lessons but never get to it. Maybe this year :-)

Hi Mason:  That's a good article.  Time to dust of the clubs and head out to the range.  Unfortunatley, it has to be the indoor range for now :-(...
