The other day, a friend realized how much work it is to lead a cause like Junior Achievement (blogged about last week), and asked WHY? Why put so much effort into this? Why take the lead and drive this in my company, across the country?
Two things come to mind. First if not me, then who? Second, I recall Amanda's blog on Balance. This is a great way of bringing a bit of balance to life. Not just being so focused on "me, Me, ME" and my career, but to think about how am I impacting the life of others. Am I making a difference? Can I do something that can help and make others happier, better prepared for life, or just improve the state of things?
We all go through these thoughts at some point. Specifically, as you go through the journey of life, it seems that the farther you get, the more you realize that you need that balance in life, and that at some point it isn't about earning the points, awards, promotions, money - anymore (but they are important too), but also to enrich life with more balance, and giving someone else some of your precious time, or helping organize many people to do the same.
Fortunately, I started thinking about this early, and want to make sure to stay engaged, and help create opportunities for other to get involved in worthy causes, set up mentoring programs, get others engaged in their communities, and start engendering the idea of starting something that will help someone else.
A part of balance is about enjoying diverse aspects of life like friends, family and giving back. The most precious balance is when you have to make choices, and take the lead DESPITE being busy and leading the hectic life.
Why? I am not sure really. Maybe it's an innate desire to lead. Maybe it's a bit of that striving for balance. Maybe it's a bit of that thought "if not you, then who?"
When you MAKE the chance to get involved - whether to lead or help - Get involved, help out, make a difference. You'll feel good, and be happier for it! :-)
Great post Charles! I'm at the point in life where I'm starting to turn the corner on the career versus 'giving back' thing. I also do a lot of reading and blogging on what REALLY makes people happy. I would say that there is overwhelming support indicating that piling up personal assets DOES NOT and that HELPING OTHERS does.
I'm also a firm believe that if you (or others) want to get something done, give it to a busy person - they seem to find a way to do it and it sounds like you're finding a way, even though it makes you more busy ;-(...
Anyhoooo, good on you for helping our youth figure out what the big world is all about - I hope you also teach them about BALANCE.
Thanks for sharing!

Ontario, Oregon, is a small town with fewer than 12,000 people. Yet it draws streams of visitors from neighboring Idaho and beyond. The reason is no secret. In Ontario, Oregon, dispensaries have become a curious border attraction with an economic engine and a cultural flashpoint. But what exactly should an out-of-state buyer expect? Far less glamour than a Netflix documentary might suggest, and far more rules than the average…
